The Academic Committee is envisaged in the Constitution of the AKPCTA as the principal academic body of the Association, entrusted with the responsibility of advising the State Committee on all academic matters. One of the Vice Presidents of the Association serves as the Chairperson of the Academic Committee. The Working Committee nominates the Convenor and other members, including the Convenors of the district-level Academic Committees.
The objectives that guide the activities of the Academic Committee include: fostering the academic interests of the members of the Association and college teachers in general; critically evaluating and commenting on the academic policies of universities, the Union and State Governments, and regulatory bodies such as the UGC; and conducting programmes and publishing materials to raise awareness among academia and the public.
Accordingly, the Academic Committee has published several monographs and pamphlets on contemporary issues in higher education, including policies and reforms promoting communalisation, privatisation, and commoditisation of education; the modernisation of the higher education sector; and concerns related to equity, access, and excellence, as well as governmental inaction, among others. Conducting training programmes for members of university academic bodies is also one of its regular functions. The Committee organizes seminars, symposia, and conferences on both academic and socially relevant topics.
Following the approval of the National Education Policy (NEP) by the Union Cabinet in July 2020, the Academic Committee conducted a series of national webinars—each addressing a key aspect of the policy and assessing how these anti-people policies seriously impact the education sector and the country as a whole.
The Committee has also initiated the process of preparing the history of the organisation, which is currently underway. It played a pivotal role in drafting the policies for the Curricular Framework and Credit System of the Four-Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUGP) in Kerala. At the critical juncture of implementation, the Committee assumed a leadership role, ensuring a smooth transition from policy to practice. By coordinating with universities, faculty, and other stakeholders, it facilitated a structured and phased rollout of the programme. The FYUGP, as a flagship initiative, presents a viable alternative to the NEP by thoughtfully addressing the regional educational context and the state’s socioeconomic realities, with a strong emphasis on academic flexibility. This systemic and inclusive approach was shaped through the expertise and proactive engagement of the Association.
The Academic Committee operates through a four-tier system comprising state, area, district, and branch-level committees.
