The All Kerala Private College Teachers Association (AKPCTA) has always upheld gender equality and justice in the field of higher education. With a shift in the sexual ratio of the college teachers, it was widely felt within the organization that a women’s committee can more effectively align the women college teachers with the association and will provide with them a forum for voicing their key concerns regarding gender issues in particular and higher education in general. Although active efforts can be traced back to 2004, women’s committee became a reality in 2008 only. Currently, there are full-fledged Women's Committee at the branch, district, regional, and state levels.
The first meeting of the Women's Committee held at Thiruvananthapuram on 19 September 2008, elected Dr R B Rajalakshmi as the chairperson and Dr. Lekha Narendran as convener. Currently Prof. Sheela.M. Joseph, (Vice President, AKPCTA) functions as the Chairperson and Prof. Shajitha.S as the Convenor of Women Committee.
The past 12 years saw a great array of activities being carried out by women’s committee based on several issues pertaining to higher education sector as well as the broader public sphere. These included campaigns, protests, awareness programmes, innovative programmes and collective-building initiatives. The committee collaborates with the Editorial Board of the journal to bring out the Women Issue of the “Private College Teacher” every year.In 2020-21, Women’s Committee has initiated creating a resource mapping and pooling of the women teachers across the state with a view to identify and make use of their talent for the society and the organization.
